Let x = number of saturday miles
Let y = number of sunday miles
(1) x + y = 450
(2) y = 3x
Substituting into (1) gives:
x + 3x = 450
which is your equation (d)

D.
If you let the distance they drove on Saturday equal x, then the distance they drove on Sunday (three times as many miles on Sunday as they did Saturday) would be 3x. The total distance they drove on Saturday and Sunday would be x + 3x. Since they drove a total of 450 miles, then the proper equation would be D. x + 3x = 450.

If you defined x as the number of miles driven on Saturday, they would have driven 3x miles on Sunday. So, over the weekend, x+3x would represent the total driven=450.

ok so the equation i got that represents this problem is...
3x (sunday) + x (saturday) = 450 (total)
so to solve for saturday, its...
x = 450 - 3x ( just move the 3x over)
um.. you do have the first equation listed. so i would pick (D)
as the answer
good luck

d, x+3x=450
x is how many miles you drove on saturday. multiply x by 3 to find the miles you drove on sunday and add them to x (saturday miles) to get to 450

I would have to say x(SAT) + 3x(SUN)= 450(total weekend travel)
x+3x=450
4x=450
x=112.5
112.5 miles driven on Saturday
