A great song nonetheless, but I think it's a bit overrated. Actually, I put many Led Zep songs over Stairway. Heartbreaker being my fav., then maybe Black Dog, Kashmir, Rock and Roll, Riverside Traveling Blues, Since I've Been Loving You, The Immigrant Song, Whole Lotta Love. I put all these over Stairway actually. I guess Stairway just has a very universal appeal to it?

I agree. Stairway is a great song, but like Heartbeaker and Whole Lotta Love, just as much or better. Just like it's been mentioned with Freebird, great song, but I like Double Trouble, Needle and Spoon, That Smell, and many more much better.

It's way overplayed and not one of my favorites by that group. Some other songs that I hear too much of are:

Hotel California - The Eagles
Old Time Rock & Roll - Bob Seger
Layla - Derek & The Dominoes
Roundabout - Yes
Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
Sweet Home Alabama or Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Light My Fire - The Doors
White Rabbit or Somebody To Love - Jefferson Airplane
We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions or Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Money or Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd
Honkey Tonk Women - The Rolling Stones
My Generation - The Who
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
My Girl - The Temptations
Black Is Black - Los Bravos

I think back in the day Stairway to Heaven was a favorite for some who did drugs and they could imagine a Stairway to Heaven.

I just went to see a friend in Georgia, we went into Florida and as we were coming up to a bridge all you could see were the clouds--my comment was "Look Cindy, there's are Stairway to Heaven". It's just how you want to see the song as being.

Led Zepplin does have many songs that are greater and better but some have more of an impact than the others.

When you say Led Zeppelin, everyone always thinks Stairway to Heaven. It is a bit overrated, because Led Zep has others songs not just STH. Just like when you say Panic! at the Disco they always think of I Write Sins.. I've actually began to dislike stairway to heaven a little because people who don't know led zeppelin are like i love them! only because they know STH. but i agree with you.

I agree that the radios overplaying and hype didn't do the song any good. I also agree that any LZ tune is great. However I guess you would have had to lived back in the day to appreciate all the different connotations that Stairway to Heaven can invoke in a person....... Great song!!!!!!!!!!

yeah alot of oldies are being rather overplayed or overrated especially with generations who dont know what the music was all about..

but yeah it is being a little overrated but it's probably the song Zep is known for really (for the not hardcore Zep fan)

not to mention it was a really big shocker and new sound to people back then

in a way it was revolutionary to rock/metal/etc.

It is a great song, but I think all people really care about is the solo within it. Same thing with "Free Bird" (it's a nice song only in my opinion), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (does anyone even enjoy the beginning?), and "Hotel California" (great, but it seems like the Eagles's only song). And "Smoke On The Water", except that one is famous for its riff. It's all about the solo. Well no, it's not just about the solo. It's a great one, but I think all parts of the song are great.

Kind of like Freebird & Hotel California...

Here's where I stand w/ "Stairway'....

It's a great rock song. Period. A bonefide. classic. But rock radio beat it to death years ago & now it's become a cliche/joke. (see "Wayne's World")

It's not Zepp's fault. Blame radio.

So for me, at this point, it's still a great song, but only good to hear maybe once or twice a year.....

Having said all that, I like plenty of other Zepp tunes too.

It has become Zeppelin's anthem. It is epic in scope, compared to most of their material, which is straightforward electric blues/rock. I also like many other songs better than STH, nevertheless, it gives us something unique and powerful that even those who don't claim to be Led Zep fans, something from their catalogue in which to groove.

It's great, but not the legendary song it's put out to be. Bohemian Rhapsody and Free Bird are legendary. Stairway is close, but not quite there.

I get mad when people say "I can play stairway!" And I'm like "wow, anyone with 1 month of guitar practice can play it."
