Salcuttas are beautiful, with sweet temperaments, but you need to take into consideration the deep commitment owning one will be. First, they live to be about 125, 130, and will weigh close to 300 pounds by the time they are full grown. They need a lot of room to roam around in, and they grow quickly. You would be amazed by how much they eat!!! And they can not tolerate low temperatures and do not hibernate, so you have to have a place to house them during the cooler months.

NO
it wont have a full life living in captivity - those that sell the sulcata babies know they wont live more then 3-5 years and at most maybe 10 years. These animals live well over 120 years and weigh over 120 pounds - stick to your smaller desert tortoise

If you cannot care for the adult, do not buy the baby.

Sulcatas are BIG- the third largest tortoise species. They are strong enough even as young adults to walk through drywall and chain-link fences. They eat a ton, and need HUGE habitats- on the order of 20'x20'.

It is a shame that they reproduce so well and are so cute as babies that they are often sold cheaply.

They are wonderful, but really think about it before buying. Babies are so cute, but will one day weigh over 100 lbs. and need a securely fenced back yard to live in. With a protected house to crawl into that is safe from predators and is HEATED in cool weather. They will graze on grass and need a HUGE fresh salad every day. They can live over 50 years. If you can provide for all of that, then go for it!! :)
