Humpty Dumpty was a large canon on the wall that surrounded St Mary's Church in Colchester. During the English Civil War, the wall beneath the canon was damaged by a shot and the canon fell down. It was so heavy that they couldn't get it back up on the wall.
The children's nursery rhyme came from this event and then Lewis Carroll developed a story from this in 'Through the Looking Glass'.

Humpty dumpty was an egg who sat on a wall and had a great fall. Though they tried, all the king's horses and all the king's men could not put humpty dumpty together again.
No word on why the king's horses and the king's men had such an interest in doing that. They should have just had an omelet.

a half-boiled egg who happened to have been sitting on a wall before falling off...causing a massive uproar but, even with the help of ''all the king's horses and all the king's men'', he couldn't be 'put...together again'...a decent explanation?
