has anybody been successful in recruiting a celebrity for a charitable cause?
I'd like to learn some of the specifics.

I was once able to get a large newspaper columnist to speak at our school. Probably not the type celebrity you are looking for, but it was fun. I just wrote him a letter.
I would guess that you would have to contact the celebrities agent or manager - and I would guess that most have some sort of compensation agreement. (If nothing else, travel and hotel).
