For a really long time I was pondering the same question. What exactly am I alive for. I think as you get older you will realise that life has a lot to offer. It whether you want to take it up or not. As human we are superior being because we have the ability to rationalise, make our own decisions and live the consequences of your decsions.
You may take life for granted because everything may be almost there for you. Food, water, shelter and family. To me life is about being able to enjoy these things. Be with the one you love, enjoy the simple things in life, breathe the air everyday, smell the beautiful flowers, see the sunrise and down, being able to add colour in someone elses life, seeing the miracle of a newborn. seeimg a life grow up before your eyes and be able to run, sing and dance.
Unfortunately. noowadays we are all in the pursuit of materrial wealth that we forget to take a step back and enjoy these things life has to offer. Life has so much to offer and it tends to flash by very fast. So if you really want life, make memories, beautiful memories of your life so that when you get old, you can live by those memories and be self actualised.

To me the meaning of life is what you get out of it.
I work with kids in a school. When I can help a
student who is struggling to learn and I get a hug
for helping that is the meaning of life. It is to give
more than you get in return. Knowing I'll leave this Earth being content that I did some good along
the way.

To assume that life has a meaning is to assume that all life has the same ultimate end. Bacteria and protozoa do not have the same meaning as humans and penguins.
Human life is special in that it's arbitrary. We have consciousness to think and understand. So we should use that.

"Meaning" is an attribute of statements, not of lives. Life has an intrinsic purposefulness, but as to what the particular purposes of a particular life are, you have to find/choose them for yourself.
___Also, this is a philosophical question. Psychology lacks the intellectual tools and methods to deal with a question like this.

Your question presupposes God. There can be no meaning or purpose of our lives unless there is a Creator who gave us our existence along with a purpose (mission to accomplish).
If God created us with a mission to accomplish, then we can't make up our own purpose.
If we reject God, then all we can do is to try some psychological tricks, i.e. keep busy and do some good deeds so we can feel good about ourselves (boost our egos). Psychological tricks like that may keep us going until we can die.
But I think God does exist and that He put our need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him. And so our purpose is to seek God and to come to know God.

42!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (just kidding, and it's not a direct quote, but I love the BOOK). Anyway, all joking aside, life has lots of different meanings, it all depends on who you are and your experiences. But in a totally nonprofessional and general answer: the meaning of life can be found in everyone's individual experiences. We live to experience things.
