You take a plunger (you can find one at home depot) and cover the whole in the toilet with the rubber circle. You then grip the stick firmly and push in, as if you were trying to push the plunger through the hole. then you pull it out, like you were done doing the whole fiasco. Repeat until the toilet becomes unplugged.

try using a toilet auger; if you are not familar with this, it consists of very thick wire wound like a spring with a larger shaped oval at one end and a crank at the other. The spring fits into a metal sleeve which is curved at the end with the oval. this end fits into the toilet bowl, turn the crank and apply pressure as you turn, the oval will grab stuff stuck. This works if the source of your clog is near the toilet bowl. If you are in the US, you can get one at Home Depot or Lowes.

I have posted this before and everyone votes it thumbs down but it works almost every time for me(except when my son flushed a shampoo bottle down the toilet).
When my toilet plugs up I get a bucket of very hot water, lift it as high as I can and pour it as fast as I can into the toilet(as fast as you can with out over folowing the toilet). The weight of the water, the force that it comes down with and the heat of the water pretty much opens it right away.

Use a Toilet Snake. You can buy a hand held version or one that attaches to a drill at most hardware stores or home centers. It won't be pretty but it'll be the chemical free way to do it.

press down firmly but slowly
(you dont want that splashing on your leg)

pull up stiffly but again slowly
(dont want it on the ceiling either)

do these two motions several times and in a couple minutes your problem will be all cured with

no mess

well thats the plan anyway
