Sorry, no. It is just a gimmick to entice people to participate more and is probably a base cause of many of the poorer answers.

In general, the points let you ask and answer more questions. The more points you have, the more questions you can ask & answer. Also, you can star more, comment more, and vote more. And once your past Level 1, you can start ranking http://answers.yahoo.com/info/scoring_system;_ylt=AtnBkHZsp0s1D8d88fEeGxo_zKIX

Also, sometimes they'll have things you can sign up for to get things for free. Like, a little while back they had a whole "help the environment" thing going on, and if you were Level 2 or higher, you could sign up and they sent you a free tote bag and light bulb (and then the more points you got, the more light bulbs you got). And quite awhile back, they gave out prizes (I think for Y!Answers anniversary), and the prizes varied according to your level. I was Level 2 at the time, I think (maybe 3), so I got a car magnet, but higher levels got T-shirts, hats, mugs, etc. So points are also useful in that way.

Or something. No prizes!

At level 1 you can't give people's answers the thumbs up or down and you can only answer a certain number of questions. You have to get enough points to move to level 2 to do this.

Er, . . .ah, no.

I just made Level 7 last week, and my boyfriend laughed at my sense of accomplishment, given that 25,000 points and $4 will buy me a coffee at Starbucks.

But for those with useful (and useless) information rolling around in our heads dying to go SOMEWHERE, this is the stuff!
