Why? Is it just because they want to look cool? Or is there a deeper reason? Do they pretect you against road burn? You'd think that SOME Motorcyclist's wouldn't but pretty much all of them do....???

PROTECTION
I spent almost 6 months in bed because I was cut off and went over the bars in shorts and a tank top. I lost 60% of the skin off my right leg, side, and arm, along with a huge patch off my back and left shoulder and leg. If I had on leather, I would have been ok more or less....I also broke my back....leather wouldn't have helped there

Motorcycles create a lot of wind rush. Even in a hot climate, you can get pretty cold while riding so the leather jacket protects you better.

More important is the fact that leather protects better than just about anything else against road rash, or getting chewed to a pulp in case of an accident.

And yes, here at our motorcycle school, ALL of the students and teachers wear leather.

The leather used to make motorcycle jackets is considerably tougher and thicker than the leather used to make a jacket you would wear around town. This extra thoughness in the leather provides greater protectoin in the event of a crash.

Some wear it as a fashion statement ... others because they like the protection it provides against road-rash or other hazards (like small flying debris) that they encounter on the road. Riding leathers are specially padded to provide greater protection against road-rash style injuries.

As a motorcyclist, I can tell you that they really protect. And on the Highway even on a hot day, they are more comfortable than a t-shirt. They hold perspiration, and when the wind comes through the jacet vents it keeps you cool.

BTW they look cool too.

It's for protection as when you slide down the road it'll save you a bit, and also it breathes so it keeps you warm without making you sweat. Men have been wearing leathers since prehistoric times!

Leather protects against road rash, it breathes, and it stops the cold wind from freezing whatever part it covers.

Some just want to look cool. It also helps with a number of things. It keeps you from getting scrapped up some, it keeps you from feeling the wind, it keeps the bugs from hurting you when they splatter on you. God forbid you smile with the teeth showing..lol

I wear leather called road armor.

There are metal plates in the knees shoulders elbows and they are heavily padded for protecting of a crash and for comfort for all day rides.

I ride pretty hard, and I have worn the knees sides off down to the scuffed metal protection plates in the knees.
