Ok. I'm gonna add some details here before I select the best answer.
What prompted this question is I have noticed on numerous answers in C&T, quite a few people are referring to the left side as right and vice-versa.
Referencing from where the driver sits doesnt work, because right-drive and left-drive cars exist in every country. I've seen Rights in the US, By brother's seen Lefts in Australia. Hence, just depending on where the driver sits isnt good enough for a 10 here.
CoastCowboy. I'm gonna single you out, I liked your answer. It was correct, and I see you've observed what I have when people try to explain it, and many are out and out wrong. But you were beat by about 3 or 4 posts for the correct answer.

As you sit in the car, the left is (in America) where the driver sits. The right is where the passenger sits. This is why European cars are called "right hand drive" because the driver sits on the right hand side of the car. Thus, the driver isn't always on the left side of the car, but a mechanic will know if you say "left front" what you're referring to.

The left side is on your left when setting in the car facing forward., and the same for the right side. Some people might remember it better if explained like a boat. Facing forward left or port is on your left side and starboard is on your right side. The two shorts go together and the two longs go together. Left, Port. Right, Starboard. Some parts are marked with an L or an R.

In the united states the left side is the drivers side and all parts and anything done to the car and ordering houses go by this rule of thumb, now if your talking of other countries where the drivers side is on the right then their passenger side is their left.

In some countries, the left side is where the driver's side is.
In other countries, the right side is where the driver's side is.
When facing forward, the left side of every car is the side that is nearest the street when the car is parked on the right side of the street. Simultaneously, the right side of the car is next to the curb in this situation.

If you are sitting in the driver's seat, that is the left side.
If you are outside the car facing the front of the car, the driver's seat is the right side.
If you are outside facing the rear of the car, the driver's seat is the left side.

It's determined from the driver's seat. Always. Same with airplanes, ships, etc. (Yes, I know, ships are port and starboard but it's still determined from the helm.)
In countries that drive on the right, the steering wheel is on the left. In countries that drive on the left, the steering wheel is on the right.

The generally acceptable answer is when the front of the car is acknowledged.
Toward the front, the left would be the driver side, the right side would be the passenger side.
