Each Gospel gives a similar account. John being the only disciple present that actually saw what was going on. I tend to lean a little more towards his account.
They all agree that Joseph of Arimathea went and asked for the body of Jesus for burial. Some say, "He took it down." Now does that mean, took the body off the cross or took his body down from Galgotha?
We do not know. I imagine since John mentions the request that the legs be broken of the convicted. I assume that before this was a ritual to speed upon the execution as when they went to Jesus. He was already dead. So one of the guards took a spear and jabbed him in the side. Blood and water gushed out. I don't know if that means Blood and Urine or stomach acid or what. Neither here nor there.
I believe that the guards took him down. They probably either used the poles they used poles to force the cross up and out of the hole. OR they used crude ladders as they afixed the "Jesus King of the Jews" sign above his head.
It does not say definitively who took him down. I imagine with all the contraversy, the guards took him down. They gave the body to Joseph and he laid it in the tomb.

It had of been the Roman Soldiers, as they usually did not remove the bodies from the crosses, and anyone could not just go up and remove a body from the cross. They left them for all to see even as the vultures were doing their thing, so others would see this horrible sight as a deterrent. If they did do this, then they would have had to bring the cross down, to get Jesus off the cross. The dead body of Jesust was given to Mary, His mother, and the family/friends. But I believe it was officially given to His mother. They then took Jesus to the cave to do their burial dressing. This is just my guess as I have not read it in the Bible, but I do remember Jesus' body was given to His mother. I don't know who gave the ok to do this, unless it could have been King Herod, or Pontias P., I am sorry I do not know the correct spelling of these men.

One of his diciples, Joseph of Arimathea.
He used a long cloth. I believe he looped the cloth between the right arm and the cross, across the chest, and up and between the left arm and the cross, so when the nails were taken out, they had a cloth holding him by his chest.
See Mark 15:46-47 [I used message version]
46-47Having already purchased a linen shroud, Joseph took him down, wrapped him in the shroud, placed him in a tomb that had been cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the opening. Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Joses, watched the burial.
But I am unable to find a scripture that supports how he was taken down, only a general idea.

I presume as others have said that the Roman soldiers helped. The Bible says: Joh 19:38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. What is most important is that Jesus came back to life!
I looked in Ushers book (The Annals of the World), but it only says the body was given to Joseph and he and Nicodemus prepared it for burial. You won't find out unless maybe there is something in the 1st century Christian authors writings, which leaves Josephus out.

probably the roman soldiers and then joseph and nicodemus claimed the body. it wasn't that hard to get the cross down because it wasn't as big as people believe. the person's feet were probably only a foot off the ground and bent at the knees. and since the person was dead they didn't really need to be all that careful of hurting them since they were dead.

There was only a reference in the bible that his friends took Him down from the cross and gave Him a proper Jewish burial.

Joseph of Arimathea came and took the body of Jesus with Pilate's permission at night. He did this with the help of Nicodemus and they wrapped the body of Jesus in linen wrappings with spices which was the burial custom of the Jews and buried Jesus in Joseph's tomb.

Nicodemus and Josephus. Mary and John likely were there. The Romans, having Pilate's authorization, likely helped with the nail-pulling, as they'd have wanted them back anyway. (Oh, and crosses were re-used, too.]
