I live in California and there are lots of flies around my neighborhood. If flies can hurt humans, how? What species can hurt us?

They can spread bacteria on their legs because you don't really know what they landed on last.

Flies are notorious for spreading disease!
Look at their habits. Then they walk across your food.
They bite.
They leave behind bacteria they picked up from the last thing they were in contact with.

One breed of fly - the "tse tse" can infect a human with sleeping sickness, I rememebr this from the 1950"s I saw it on a news show way back then.

Some can lay their egg under the skin. Once the egg gets to the larval stage it is very big and hungry. Here's a video for you, not for the squeamish:
