When adding or subtracting fractions, the first step is to find a common denominator among all the fractions. For the numbers 4, 6, and 8, the common denominator is 24. So now you manipulate the fractions so they all have a denominator of 24 (eg. for the first one multiply both the top and bottom by 6 so 3/4 = 18/24)
3/4 = 18/24
1/6 = 4/24
1/8 = 3/24
3/4 - 1/6 + 1/8
= 18/24 - 4/24 + 3/24
= 17/24

find a common denominator
this may not seem obvious if you don't practice
the LCM for this is 24; so make all the fractaions into something over 24 by multiplying them by a form of one (6/6=1; 4/4=1; 3/3=1; etc)
3/4(6/6) - 1/6(4/4) + 1/8(3/3)
18/24 - 4/24 + 3/24
17/24
hope that helped good luck in math this year!

Seriously, CPUcate is a moron. 3*6 is 18, not 12.
Yeah, this isn't algebra, it's 5th grade math.
You need a common denominator - 24 is a factor of 4, 6, and 8.
Multiply the first fraction by 6/6 to get 18/24. Multiply the second by 4 to get 4/24. Multiply the third by 3 to get 3/24.
18/24 - 4/24 = 14/24.
14/24 + 3/24 = 17/24

First, find the "dreaded" common denominator, which in this case is 24 (take the biggest denominator, and work your way up until you find one that works: 8 does not, 16 does not, 24 does)
3/4 = 18/24
1/6 = 4/24
1/8 = 3/24
18/24 -4/24 + 3/24 = 17/24
