hmmm...good question. I don't think it is so much as being less concerned as the fact that rural residents tend to be poorer and thus "vanity" takes a back seat to basic necessities.

I grew up in rural areas and the only time you really need to dress up is for church, weddings, funerals, and graduations. Since there isn't a lot of money and these communities are sometimes 10-40 years behind the times, it's not that the women and men don't care about their appearance, they are less likely to know what the latest fashions are, but also, they are often more conservative than urban areas, so they're less likely to be interested in wearing the latest fashions.

Please come to the south and visit. Let us dispel this idea you have of the "rural" life. I have to say, as I am typing this, I am in a 3 piece designer outfit while at work. Hair and make-up are complete. There have been times I have worked cattle during the day, then put a ball gown on and dined with the governor of our state that night. I might be from the south, but please don't let the accent fool you. Have a wonderful day!

i'm considered to live in a "rural" area, and there's not much less advertising. not as many billboards & whatnot, but we still get tv & movies & magazines & newspapers.
and i don't see much of a difference in women's appearances. maybe the ultra religious women (and we may have an uncommon amount of those) but not ordinary women.
lol... some of these notions about rural women crack me up!!

I think it depends on the region you live in to some extent. I live in Berkeley and I've noticed that there's alot of diversity in make-up and fashions in the Bay Area, even the big city of San Francisco. I used to live in the southeastern US, and many of those "country girls" turned into fashion queens to hit the bars on the weekend.

I don't know enough to be comfortable with your premise. I have an idea that beneath the high-style or country gingham clothing lies some very find women. Maybe sans bikini cut.

More like they are more likely to be doing manual work and therefore dress accordingly.
Ever tried feeding the hogs when you're wearing heels ? I mean, what's the point - the hogs don't care as long as they get fed.
They save the dressing up for the evenings.

I think women who dress plainly prefer the rural areas. Country girls are not lured by "fancy living". Likewise, city women are lured by these things and prefer the city.

No I think they are healthier with muscles and tan and fit without gauntness and druggie bags under their eyes and because they are in rural areas they try harder to be attractive to their men to not feel "left out" and they are excited and enthusiastic for feminine styles and fashion and fittness.

Country folks don't like to "put on airs," as they say. Make-up, frilly hair-do's and frou-frou accessories only call attention to the wearers' insecurities.
Remember "Green Acres" and how out-of-place ZsaZsa's character seemed? That's what made the show funny.
