It is a full body workout, but you will particularly gain muscle in the shoulders and triceps, along with strengthen the hamstrings with certain leg motions. This is not a "bulky" type muscle gain, more of a tone.
Like running, it is working out that is the key and not just being in a pool and working easily. You can't leisurely "jog" and get a solid workout.

Well, it depends on what you do in the pool, consistently, that will give you results. I swam all 4 strokes, backstroke, breastroke, butterfly and freestyle. Sometimes, we would have to do 30 lengths with a board to strengthen the legs and perfect the kicks, flutter, frog, then there were the 2 buoys we had, it just looked like a couple of cylinders connected with 2 ropes that we had to squeeze between our thighs to perfect and strengthen the arms.
I did this for 10 years and though I wasn't as cut as a bodybuilder, I was definitely proud of my arms, legs, back and stomach. It works every muscle group, even the ones you didn't know you had.

Yeah but u c swimming is a different kind of muscle. Its not a muscle built like weighlifting, what swimming really does is tone your muscles. It increases muscle effeciency. Like if you look at Olympic swimmers they're not really like "buff" but they're muscles are very efficient and toned.
Now it will literally work every single muscle. the muscles that u gain most will depend on the stroke. but pretty much its your triceps, quads, back, abs, cardio muscle, and your shoulders.
