Im a new mommy and have many questions! I delivered my baby August 22 and before I was discharged from the hospital I was told that my baby needs to go to a peditrician to get a hearing test, which is done again at one week after they are born. My husband has United Health Care which is the insurance that I used at the hospital, but Im confused because I dont know if my baby is also covered or not? Is she automatically added on after she was born? Or do I have to call to add her? Sorry for my ignorance, please help!

First of all, congratulations on your new baby. My first daughter was born on August 22nd......21 years ago!

Yes, your daughter is automatically covered; however you DO have to call the insurance company and let them know about her birth and give all the pertinent information. It may still take a while for them to get her into the system so be sure to ask what information you will need to give to the doctor when you go in so they won't give you a hard time.

In most states its a requirement that newborns are covered from the moment of birth without showing proof of insurability. The first 60 days in most states baby will be covered even if the insurance company has not been notified. But the policy holder must notify company within those first 60 days of baby being born and pay any required up charge.

Dont be sorry this isnt common knowledge. I happen to be a licensed agent but you should call asap to be on the safe side.

Good luck to you and yours!!!!!

Compare free quotes from dif companies at INSUREDEALS.INFO- RE Newborn Covered by Insurance? My friend's baby was born one month early. She was in the NICU for 5 days due to breathing problems. My friend has health insurance and so does her fiance (seperate policies, different companies). The finance was going to cover the child when she was born. The insurance said she should have been pre-enrolled b/c nicu is not typical newborn charges... and the finances' insurance say they are not responsible until after the 14th (she was born a month earlier than that). jill said my insurance only pays if we are in the hospital the same amount of time.. if she stays longer she is a dependant and wasnt eligable to be added to the fiance's yet.. it makes no sense... and how could she be pre-enrolled.. The finance went in april and tried to add her to his and they said wait til she is born... and she came a month early according to my doc so how could she have added her to mine? The letter she got from the hospital said the baby is covered automatically under the mothers insurance for 30 days after they are born. So; who is responsible for the $26,000 bill for the NICU?

You need to call and have her added on to the insurance. They waive the open enrollment rule for newborns and should be able to give you a medical record over the phone so that you will not have to wait to make her a doctor appointment. The first thing I did when I was home from the hospital, beside taking a long bath, was adding my daughter to our insurance.

she should instantly added to the insurance. She has already been generating bills under her own name the moment that she left your body. You should call the insurance still, but she is covered from the moment of birth forward.

Kinda like when you buy a new car....it is covered under your insurance from the moment you sign that papers for the drive home even if you don't call your insurance until the next day.

Good Luck.

Yes, she is covered for 30 days without having to be officially added *(it's called well child benefits)

Your husband needs to go to his H.R. office at work within the first 30 days of the child's birth to have the child added with the social security number to the insurance plan

congratulations on the birth of your child!!

Most companies automatically cover newborns for a certain amount of time (mine was 60 days) before you have to officially enroll them. You probably don't have to rush and talk to the insurance people right this second, but I would recommend calling them as soon as you can to see what you have to do.
Congrats!

The child needs formally enrolled and in fact, if the child isn't formally enrolled, the insurance company will take back any money it has paid out. At my work, you have two weeks from date of birth, except in an emergency, at my prior employer you had sixty days.

Congratulations, babies are wonderful. Enjoy her, she will grow so fast you will almost not remember what she was like when she was this little.

Like the others said, you do need to call your insurance company. But, you also need to make sure that they cover everything since the day she was born. They should automatically do so, but these days you have to make sure everything is done correctly or you can get easily screwed! Congrats!!
