you have lots of choices on your hands
mollies
platies
neon tetras
cory cats (bottom feeder)
..... all the fish that are tropicals, that means they are not aggressive
What you have to stay away from are male guppis, swords, serpae tetras, everything that has longer fins
As for adding fish on thursday, you're only suppose to add 3-5 fish at a time with a week apart
Hope that helps
Good luck

Best thing is to start out small. When you get a new dog, you are aware of the surroundings and look for things that can harm him. the tank is the same way. if you add too many fish too soon, you will be flushing the toilet as quickly as you bought them. I would add small fish since you didn't say how big of a tank, I will assume 10 gallon which is the average starter tank size. I would say at the most, three small fish..guppies or swords or danios are very hardy (tolerant) stay away from tetras they stress out to fast. Your tank isn't ready to handle the bio load of a tank full of fish so the less is best and add slowly. And feed small amounts. Better to have hungry fish than food all over the bottom of the tank. (more upkeep). It will also slowly add a little more bio load each feeding. Try to stay away from all the commercial stuff out there. You need your tank to cycle naturally.

How many gallons is your tank?
If its 10+ gallons, then you can add a few small species of fish with your betta. If its smaller than a 10 gallon, then I wouldn't recommend adding any fish with it because I personally think that its not enough room for more.
I would suggest corydora catfish, tetras, or otocinclus catfish. All of these fish will get along fine with your betta and they stay under 4 inches.
Just keep in mind that bettas are only agressive towards other bettas or fish that look similar to them.

You can have plenty of fish with a betta, your problem is that the betta needs to be the last fish you add in your tank so that it doesn't become territorial and kill other fish.
The only fish you should keep it away from are guppies, male and female. Or any other fish with a similar tail or fin(s).
Tetras, mollies, platies, corys, plecs, rasboras, gouramis are great options to keep. So try to balance you tank with surface, mid water, bottom feeder fish. Try to keep a community aquarium as semi and aggressive fish will attack peaceful slow moving fish, so check at yor pet shop, for compatibilty.
I would usually add a maximum of 5 fish at a time every 5-7 days to allow them to get adjusted.
The ratio is usually 1.5cm fish to every 2Litres.

Well, it depends, what is your tank size? Mostly people have a 10 gallon tank. As for you, you have a lot of choices.
Beginner:
Zebra Danios
Harlequin Rasboras
Cherry Barb
Cory Cat
Otocinclus Cat
Neon Tetra
Diamong Tetra
Penquin Tetra
Mollies
Platies
-------------------------------------
Your betta should be fine with the fish I have listed. For now, pick one species of fish, research them and see if your interested in them and buy them. As for now, buy six of the species you picked. All of the fish listed above should get along well together

Catie is wrong. You can have many fish with a betta. You can add a few small schooling or livebearing fish on thursday. Just make sure not to get swordtails because they will nip at your bettas fins. A betta is not agressive to anyother fish besides a betta.

My betta from the pet store actually came from a tank with other fish, so you can put them in together, he was in with what they called starter fish and that were considered to be non-threating fish (green sticker) on the label.

well they say that betta's should be the only one fish in your tank because they are so aggressive, but I have heard that you can put african chiclids in with them. They are also a very aggressive. They are what I have in a 90 gallon tank and they are beautiful.

you shouldn't put any fish in with a betta they are soposed to be in small tanks/bowls alone. accept if you are mating them, then you can add a female betta to mate and then you need to separate again.
