Computer exits games to desktop?

During game play of games like Madden 07 and BattleField Vietnam, my computer will go back to the desktop. It doesn't seem to affect the game, but it is rather annoying to be running a play and all of a sudden you are at the desktop and when you go back to the game you have to try to keep playing from that point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use a game controller with the games, therefore I am not touching the keyboard to hit any keys, ie. start, etc. The games do not exit, they play in the background.

Can you be more specific - does it crash the game, or keep it running in the background???

If it's still running, then DON'T press Alt and Tab at the same time (or the Windows key) ;);););)

Also, don't hit the "Start" button on your keyboard. That will open your Start menu and minimize the game.
