If you are in the Midwest, consider University of Northern Iowa. It is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, a smallish city in northeast Iowa. It is the small of the three state schools. It is a really fun college culture in a smart town that loves the school.

UNI is in a state nationally renowned for it's education system. Among other things, this means you can student teach in some of the finest schools in the country, just by cutting through a couple cornfields down the road from the college. Being a small school with a lot of individual attention from professors who are setting the standards for their field. They have a lab school right on campus, Price Lab, I think it is a charter school. There are lots of opportunities to spend time there in a real classroom environment, with a real student body, for hands-on experience.

UNI is known for quite a few majors (education being one of them), but the big deal is that there are not a whole lot of graduate programs there, it is truly a school for the undergrad. You will be taught by professors and part timers who are stepping right out of their field to tell you what it's like in their profession. They are researching to be sure, but they all teach classes, and hold office hours instead of being out of your reach. In other words, you aren't being educated by grad students.

I went there, majored in Social Work and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I took a couple classes in the education department and found it to be a great department, as well as knowing a lot of teachers who were educated there.

There are so many great colleges for education major. I would look into what states and cities you want to go to. Then look up the colleges in that area and look at the education program. Also, check out the career center and try to hook up with alumni from that college with education major. That way you can ask them questions regarding the program, the professors, and how successful they are now in their career.
