The anonymous nature of the internet makes people think they can get away with anything, including being mean to someone they'll never meet. Curiously, a very tiny percentage of such people are introverted in the "real" world; a higher percentage are just plain jerks, who are arrogant in real life; but the overwhelming majority are either misunderstood due to poor communication skills, or, they are people who misunderstand what someone tells them, and react negatively, usually to an extreme.

As an example: On a different website, I "private messaged" (PM) somebody to let them know that one of their profile links was invalid; a perfectly innocent "letter", right? Well, instead of responding to that, he started talking about something completely different, related to his profile. I did a virtual shrug, and continued the "conversation", but, then I realized that he was becoming more and more belligerent, and I couldn't understand why. The more questions I asked to help resolve the situation, the worse he became. Finally, he cursed at me (believe me when I say that I didn't deserve it!), and then, bizarrely, told me that he was somebody famous! Now, even if I believed that, how does that excuse his behavior? Since he knows that there is no way I can verify his claim, he feels "safe" to say and do as he pleases. Unfortunately for him, I "moderated" him by reporting his abuse (I'm a "trusted contributor" on that site), and he was "busted" (they subtracted a few points from him; one more mistake, and he's out!) (BTW, he never did fix the bad link!).

On *this* website, lots of people give negative ratings to perfectly valid answers, simply because they disagree with the answer, or don't like the person (if you give someone a negative rating, do so because the answer is wrong or inappropriate or universally offensive, not simply because you don't agree with it or it's too long (ahem!)). One person was so upset about getting LOTS of negative ratings for a GREAT answer, that she posted a question just to find out why folks thought her answer was "bad". The best explanation was that the answer was too "long", but the question was so vague that a "simple" answer was virtually impossible! And, IMHO, her response was perfect, and far superior to all the other answers, combined!!!

Anyway, the moral is: Don't bother trying to make "peace" with anyone. It isn't worth the time and effort to apologize to a jerk, and, unfortunately, there are many of them out there (fortunately, though, they are in the minority; the first "answer" to this question is a perfect example of this). You're better off "blocking" or "reporting" that person, if that site has such capabilities. And, most importantly, don't take it personally, and don't stoop to their level by starting a "flame" war or similar!

I guess because if you're mean to someone in real life, you can see their hurt expression, and that would bother you. I'm not saying it's right to be mean in a chatroom...

I'm usually very friendly when I chat with people on RuneScape...

Because chatrooms are anonymous (sorta). People are bolder when they know you cannot see them. It's easier to be an a** when they cannot see you. Basically, people who are mean like that are just cowards and not worth your time or energy anyway.

dude, people in chatrooms are looking for something. Think about it. They haven't had any in long while and so causes the crankies. We all get that way. Hang in there, it will get better. Good Luck.

No, there's always some dips**t who gets off on the fact that he can ruin people's experience without any real repercussions.
