I know both would be the ideal but which is the better option if you could only have one quality of the two?

JB, That all depends on your goals and priorities ! Me, I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I prefer commen sense !

Great intelligence is not worth much without common sense. You can get by well with common sense and average intelligence.

i don't see how you could be intelligent and not have common sense(unless you were a cliched nerd, with slick hair and plaid shirt, and your name is)
