The condition of the coin is the key to whether it has any collector value. If it is new with a lot of detail in the design it is worth more than if it has been circulated and shows some wear. Another factor affecting value is how common is the coin. If the coin is easily found it is not worth as much as something that is not easily found.

There are several places you could sell your coin. A coin dealer will buy it for about 60% of his selling price. A collector will probably pay a little more but still something less than the full retail price. After all if he wanted to buy it for full retail he could go to the coin dealer.

Hope this helped, have fun.

That sure is a big question, for coin collectors are a diverse lot and collect all kinds of coins. I have sets of U.S. coins but since I have collected so long, I have now branched off into Oriental coins. I have always like Ancient coins also. A dealer will buy the coin from you if it has value and is in a decent grade. One thing though you must go to the right dealer. Most U.S. coin dealers know little about world coins, so a world coin dealer is needed if you have world coins. Most dealers are honest if they deal in what you have, they pay less for things they know nothing about. If you just have an old coin it might pay you in the end to ask a question about it giving what is on the obverse and reverse. Then someone here maybe able to give you a ballpark price so you won't be taken. Over the years I have done well by knowing more about the coin I want to buy or sell than the dealer does.

Each collector is different...some collect currency (bills), some foreign coins, some proof sets, quarters, etc....In the coins themselves they look for the rarity and condition of the coin. They do not want coins that have been cleaned. Sell them at flea markets, coin shows, eBay...
