Well known in what subject area?
I'll go with the "classics" they tend to assign in high school and/or college, and hopefully that'll be what you're looking for. I'll separate into "older" and "newer" in a general way, but sometimes the line is kind of blurry.
Older Stuff:
Jane Austen
E.M. Forster
William Faulkner
Henry James
Edith Wharton
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Edgar Allan Poe
Mark Twain
Sarah Orne Jewett
Willa Cather
Zora Neale Hurston
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Ernest Hemingway
John Steinbeck
Doris Lessing
Kate Chopin
Stephen Crane
Newer Stuff:
Toni Morrison
Louise Erdrich
Alice Walker
Raymond Carver
John Updike
Kurt Vonnegut
James Baldwin
Flannery O'Connor

How about these:
William Saroyan
John Updike
John Ringo
David Weber
Raymond Feist
Eric Flint
S.M.Stirling
Tanya Huff
Jane Lindskold
Ursula K. LeGuin
H. Rider Haggard
H. Beam Piper
Stuart Woods
J.A.Jance
John Dunning
James Doss
I would have said V.C. Andrews, but the author has been dead for twenty years. The publishers own the name and put stories out by unknown authors under V.C.Andrews name.

How many do you want? 20? I think that should be enough for this answer. In fact, I’ll go one better: I’ll provide one book each person wrote.
Alphabetically:
The Bible - Old & New Testaments - complete with Concordance
The Koran
Robert G. Allen: ““The One Minute Millionaire”
Claude M. Bristol: “The Magic of Believing”
Andrew Carnegie: “The Gospel of Wealth and Other Timely Essays”
Dale Carnegie: “How to Win Friends and Influence People”
George S. Classon: “The Richest Man in Babylon”
Russell H. Conwell: “Acres of Diamonds”
Benjamin Franklin: His Autobiography
Mark David Hansen: “Chicken Soup for the Soul”
Napoleon Hill: “Think and Grow Rich”
Barbara Ann Kifer: “Roget’s Thesaurus”
Robert Kiyosaki: “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”
Og Mandino: “The Greatest Salesman in the World”
James Michener: “Hawaii”
Carl Sandburg: “Selected Poems”
Will Rogers: says “I Never Met A Man I Didn’t Like” Favorite Quotations
William F. Russell: “Classics to Read Aloud to Young Children”
Mark Twain: “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”
Leon Uris: “Exodus”
Charles Van Doren: “How to Read a Book” - Last name “Van Doren” - two names.
Webster’s Dictionary [OR any good, unabridged dictionary]
Many of these authors have several wonderful books.
What’s that? Yes, I know they aren’t in quite alphabetical order. But as far as I’m concerned, nothing is higher than God.
Excuse me? Yes I know I gave you more than 20. AND I could probably give you 200.
In fact, you have an almost endless supply of reading material from at least two sources:
1] the Internet
2] Your local library or library system. The library is a wonderful place to visit - and learn!
Knowledge IS power!
Now its my turn: How many do you have in your home library? How many have you read?
Did you know: once you buy a book or a book is given to you - almost any book - its yours!
You can do with it what you want. You can read it - not the whole book in one sitting -
BUT JUST five [5] pages - let’s count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
You can write in it and make notes in it!
OR you can let that book sit on the shelf and be a dust collector.
Sorry, you won’t get any recognition, diploma or sheepskin, but you will be able to consider yourself an expert in that field!
Finally: did you know if a person spent just one hour each day reading and studying about the subject she/he loves and the profession she/he aspires to, within five [5] years, that person could be an expert in her/his chosen field?
The choices are up to Y-O-U! YOU!
Thank you for asking your question. I enjoyed taking the time to answer your question. You did a great job - not only for your information, but for every other person interested in reading my answer. Thanks to everyone for reading my answer.
I wish you well!
Very Truly Yours,
Ron Berue
