wall socket > ethernet cord > modem > ethernet cord > router > ethernet cord > computer

Go to Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection > properties > status > details > make a note of the default gateway

Open browser to the default gateway address and configure your router. On the wireless tab, edit your SSID to something other than the default, disable the SSID broadcast, set up WPA encryption, and save the settings.

Back to Network Connections. Right-click your wireless connection > properties > wireless networks tab > add > type in the name of your SSID, sharing is "shared", enter your WPA key, set it to connect to that network automatically, then save. In a minute or two, your wireless connection should say "connected".

At this point, remove the ethernet cord from the computer to the router and you are ready to roll.
