The present McDonald's Corporation officially says the first McDonald's was started in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Actually though, that restaurant was the ninth franchise of a chain started by Dick and "Mac" McDonald in San Bernadino, California in 1940.

The Des Plaines restaurant was owned by Ray Kroc, who later bought out the McDonald brothers and launched the mega-franchise now known as McDonalds.

So although McDonalds Corporation sucks up to owner Kroc, I would give credit to the McDonald brothers and say it started in California, even though it probably never would have exploded into the monster it is today if Kroc hadn't bought into the franchise.

1940 - In the beginning, 1937 Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the Airdrome in Arcada, California. The Airdrome was moved to San Bernardino, California in 1940.

The first McDonalds was in a roadside truck, I think, but not exactly sure, but I think it was in Illinois. Ray Kroc brought his idea of a milk shake to the McDonalds brothers, who owned the roadside eatery. They liked the idea and took him on as a partner. After Ray Kroc's milk shakes became a huge success, he brought out the McDonalds share of the business and ended up owning it all.
