First take courses in zoology and familiarize with habit, habitat, and distribution of animals. Study their natural history.
Do study statistics. Find out what other ethologists are doing. Study the design of their experiments. Then you will land upon an area of your own interest.

I spoke with my advisor since I considered becoming an animal behaviorist and he advised me to change my major to Zoology.
He told me however there isn't much work to be done unless you go for grad school / Ph.d program.

Depends. I am an ethologist. I study animal behavior in the wild. Ethology is a branch of zoology. Good place to start, zoology.
