Everyone with half a brain realized the housing boom was going to take a downturn in the not too distant future.

Politicians are always taking credit for the good and dodging responsibility for the bad. It's not a Bush thing. They all do it.

Lenders go bankrupt because they made bad loans to people who were not credit worthy. People spend like drunken sailors and buy homes they cannot afford and it all comes crashing down. Trying to pin this on government agency or elected official is foolish. A lot of people got greedy including lenders and borrowers and they both have to face reality. For those of us who continued to live below our means and spent wisely there will be no issues. This is a classic situation of poor decision making coming back to burn those who failed to think long-term. The only way this will hurt the wise homeowner or investor is if the government decides to tax them to bail out the foolish.

Foreclosures are up 70% too. Presidents may not have a lot of control over that sort of thing, but if they're not willing to take the blame for the bad news, they shouldn't claim credit for the good news.
