How old do you think David is suppose to be? The one that Michelangelo painted?

I mean the statue! Sorry folks!

I'd say 16-18 since the sculpture (not painting heh) is supposed to be symbolic of youthfulness. For those who say mid to late twenties, that was middle age in the 1500s, so I don't think he was that old.

Twenties I would guess. I can't imagine where he would have found a model with a body like that, unless he found a young built like a brick you know what house quarry worker who was willing to pose nude for the money. I've wondered about this. The Renaissance artists looked to antiquity for inspiration. Notice all the muscle bound naked guys on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The statue may have been done without a model but again relying on what the Renaissance artist saw as the Greek ideal. I understand that Michelangelo was gay but notice the little wa-hoo. Did he run out of marble or something? Puzzling.

Michelangelo's "David" is actually a statue. Painting it would be like gilding the lily.

But about 16 or 17; he was a shepherd...old enough for a little responsibility, but too young to do a man's work.

Michelangelo portrayed David partly as the ideal man, partly as an adolescent youth. So I would say about 15 or 16.

The sculpture is ....David ........ When he was 15 years old.
