symbolism is when something represents something else. Generally a small thing is used as an example to explain, demonstrate, or glorify, a larger thing, person, principle, concept, entity, or nation. Writers use it a lot. The book Animal Farm was all symbolism. On the surface it was about animals taking over a farm, but symbolically, it was about the corruption of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.
