Is this propriate words from a director and a dean?
Hi, I am an international student who was admitted by a college. Today, I contact the program director and dean because the concern that maybe I can not register on time because of the visa status problem. I tried to explain my situtation but they seemed didn't hear. The director said that it is inpropriate to contact him about my problem. The dean said if you said one more word, I will resent you to the admission office then you will never be registered in ***.

Well, I am not very familiar with the American college faculty professional code or regulations. So will any body tell me about this? I mean, is this propriate for the director and the dean said that to me? And is it inpropriate for me to contact the director about my problem? ( Before contacting him, I also contact the international student office and the school office and also the academic advisor, but the problem seems beyond their capacity and also I got different answers from different parties and documents I reviewed.

Thank you for all above answers.

Actually, this is a very small college. For my problem, I have already contact the International Student Office many times. Maybe because the ISO officer is not familiar with international student issue, especially my case is differernt from other international students. (this is a very small college, and only a few international students ), the ISO officer went tht wrong direction and my problem is still there being more serious. Because my visa status is bound to the program study, I thought the ISO officer can contact the graduate school to see how to solve the problem but she refused and told me she can't do that but I can. ( Actually my friends who enrolled in other universities or colleges are in the same situation as me but their school's ISO officers are responsible for all the things, contact and negociate with the graduate schools and the problems already sloved.) So I tried to contact the graduate school.

So I tried to contact graduate school via emails and my academic advisor to ask about the register deadline ( I reviewed the all documents I got from school but got different answers X and Y) and wether can I pay tuition or deposit for reserve seats in classes. ( But in this school the classes are filling up very fast and some of them already full.) But there's no reponse. I waited for from last week till this week. Also sign advisor is my responsibility but I can't do this without register. ( ISO officer told me I can't register until my problem sloved.) So I called advisor, she only told me the register deadline is Z. I was totally confused and very worried about it because the register deadline is very important to my problem. I can find only the director's phone numer then I called him. He only told me is the Y but he is not sure about it. The day after that day, I walk into the ISO, talked with ISO officer about the problem and she said I must contact graduate school myself.

So I left the ISO and tried to called advisor and director but no body answer the phone. I tried to find graduate school office myself. ( The ISO officier said she didn't know where is the director's office)
The graduate school officer told me the register deadline is Y but she also said if I got different answers I 'd better to confirm it.) I walked out of the office and thinking what should I do next. At this time, my cellphone ringed, it's the director called and he spoke very strict and kind of rude and didn't listen to my explanations about my emergency situation and no body can confirm the register deadline. He said in the phone, you are inpropriate contacting me! I felt very angry at that time, said, I don't think you are speaking appropriate. Then ended the call. I felt very bad. Though it is a small college but I still can't find the people who can solve my problem. Actually there's no time left. If my problem con't solved in time, I may concern the illegal stay in US.

Actually there's no time left. If my problem con't solved in time, I may concern problem about the illegal stay in US. I walked into the presidence office to ask for the help about my trouble. The presidence called the dean of graduate school and the dean of graduate asked president resent me to the graduate school. Then I backed to the same office. The director has already in the dean's office. The dean spoke his first sentence very strictly, . I sail, I have never said I want to do that. I won't do that at all. And then the dean, the director and I argued for minutes. But it is meanlingless. Becase they refuse to hear my word. Only repeated YOU CANNOT REGISTER BEFORE YOU GOT THE VISA STATUS. I felt very bad that they are so rude ( In my country, professors are very very kind to students. And also students respect professors also). The dean said, IT'S OVER. IF YOUR SAY ONE MORE WORD, I WILL RESENT YOU TO THE ADMISSION OFFICES AND YOU WILL NEVER BE REGISTERED IN **** COLLEGE.

I felt very angry and said, DO YOU THINK I'M BEGGING YOU? I AM TRYING TO EXPLIAN THE SITUATION AND DISCUSS THE PROBLEM. The dean said, THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM. I said, YOU SCHOOL ADMITS ME AND THE ISO ASSITS ME TO FILE THE VISA STATUS APPLICANT. BUT YOU NEVER TOLD ME WHAT WILL HAPPEN AND HARM ME! The director said, our policy no exceptional, It's inpropriate for you to contact advior and me. I said, I am not begging for any exception, I am trying to solve the prolem, my student visa is bounded to the study program. If I have any problem about the visa status and cannot register and cannot start study, shouldn't I contact the graduate school? shouldn't I contact my advisor? and shouldn't I contact the program director if the problem wasn't solve and I am facing the problem of potencial illegal stay? Is any responsiblity of you and graduate school here? I have been pushed into this bad situation.

No, it's not appropriate - but it's hardly actionable. If you're applying to a private college - I suggest you stick to the chain of command when asking questions or seeking help. If you don't get the answers you need - pursuing the appropriate individuals will get you further than alienating them by going "above their heads".

It's the equivalent of pissing off your server in a restaurant. Don't do it!

If it was a large University, it was inappropriate to contact the Dean and Director. They are very high-level people in the college. If it was a smaller college, it shouldn't have been such an issue, but from his reaction, I gather that this is the Dean of a rather prestigious institution.

Generally, if you are having problems with the Registration process, you need to contact the Registrar's Office of the University you are attending. The Dean and Director are only to be contacted in situations of the utmost importance. I'm sorry that they were so rude to you, but I think they may have been angry that you weren't going through the right channels to begin with, and they felt that you were wasting their time.
