As another answerer says check out some websites. But in particular go to Tour Egypt and log onto the Luxor blog it is run by a friend of mine an English woman called Jane.
I recommend to everyone who is coming to Egypt that they get a Lonely planet Guide . It saves having to hire a guide, believe me if you just go with what is recomended in the book you will not go wrong.
The best thing is no business can ask or pay to be included in the Lonely Planet Guides .Their recommendations are done by secret travellers who go and stay, eat or use a particular service.
So get hold of one! It has an extremly good section on Pharaonic Egypt and Luxor.
There really is just an incredible amount to see in and around Luxor. So I hope you are allowing yourself at least 2 full days. Even then, you will just fit in all the most well known sights.
Luxor, ancient Thebes was a powerhouse for the worship of Amun and it played a significant role as an administrative and religious centre throughout the almost all the dynastic eras of ancient Egypt.
We really are so lucky that so much has "survived the intervening millenias of invasion and the settlement of a diverse range of people and their belief systems.
The Luxor Souk and the surrounding streets have recently been revamped. Which makes shopping there a much more pleasurable experience.
You can get some really great deals in gold in Luxor but do check out the weight when the dealer is weighing it.
Generally you pay only the going rate for gold, plus maybe 10%, no more. So check out gold prices before you leave home.
Luxor is very differant to Cairo. The streets are a little less crowded and the traffic slightly less frightning. The people in Luxor, especially those who live on the west bank where I live, are just a little more laid back in their attitude and nearly everyone speaks very good English and usually at least one other language as well.
Like Cairo or any other city in Egypt it is a very safe city to take a walk, even alone.
It is at night that Luxor looks her best and a slow wander down the Corniche which runs along the Nile is really worth doing.Or you can take a ride in a calaboosh, but remember to bargain with the driver, about 5LE will get you anywhere you need to go in Luxor either by taxi or the horse drawn claboosh. The lights of the Luxor Temple and the luxury cruisers reflecting in the Nile makes it look really magical.
When you are heading out to either The Valley of the Kings ,Deir el Bari etc or to Karnak remember to stock up on bottled water before you go.
Or you will end up paying 10 times the normal price which is usually around 2.50LE a bottle.
You are going to fall in love with Luxor, everyone does. I did,I came here from Australia on a tour almost 6 years ago and now I call it home.
Cheers and enjoy my Luxor!

Luxor has two thirds of Egypt's monuments. You will love it. on the east side of the Nile river you will enjoy the Karnak temple, it is huge so give it enough time. Also the Luxor temple, the Luxor museum and the bazzar. Do not forget to take a walk along the cornich. At night do not miss the sound and light show at the Karnak temple, ask about the hour for the English language show.
On the west side of the Nile river you can visit the Dair el bahari temple of Queen hatshepsut, the valley of the Kings where the famous tomb of king Tut Anch Amun is located. Also the valley of the the Queens and that of the nobles.
You can make a visit to Aswan too by car. During the trip you can make stops to visit the temples of Isna, Edfu and kom Ombo.
I prefer that you hire a guide either if it is not already included in your reservation of the hotel and trasportation. There is so much to see, it is difficult to know what is more important than other things, guids can in no time draw your attention to the extra valuble pieces, they can make comparisons so that you appreciate more what you are seeing.

i just came back and miss it like mad.
assuming you want to see the sites, the must sees are
valley of the kings
hatshepsut
karnak and
the luxor museum
if you are very keen i would also recommend
deir el Medina ( valley of the artisans)
valley of the queens
medinet habu (Ramses 3 temple)
and if you are a fanatic, there is also the valley of the nobles
the rameseum
setis temple
luxor temple
there is more but i really dont think you will even get to see half of the above.
find a taxi to take you to these places. negotiate the price in Egyptian pounds for where you want to go for the morning.
the drivers are mostly very helpful and will show you where to buy tickets etc.
also go to the tourist souk and coffee shop.
and enjoy it
can help more if you want more i have been there many many times e mail.
one other thing be careful some of the locals can be extremely over zealous in their attentions, i had my 17 yr old daughter with me and she found it all a little daunting.
be firm when you say no. and if necessary threaten with a higher authority. they are very very persist ant.

go to a travel agent so that they would make all the resrvations, flight, boat, hotel, etc. you cannot do any on your own.
when you are there, the tour guide wll take you to a different place every day.
perhaps it would be worth while to go to aswan for 3 days. it's beautiful and has some of the greatest monuments , but luxor has more, so you had better spend most of the time there.
most agents would take you to aswan 1st by air, then by boat on the River Nile to luxor. at the end of the tour you will go to cairo to take your flight home.
this itinerary can be made the other way round, ie, cairo, luxor, aswan, cairo . it all depends on the resevations. it's practically the same. so take either.

I took the boat trip, down the Nile. It was very romantic and very relaxing. Remember you go on vacation to relax. Do not try to put so much into a short time. Relax and don't forget to schedule your down time.
