The others are right, there are often people hanging out in front of the Home Depot stores -- especially in South Bay. Another popular hangout for these type of laborers (mostly Brazilian in this case) is the parking lot on Brighton Avenue at Allston Street in Allston.
As for college students, most aren't back yet - but schools like BU do offer a formal program for employing students on a part-time temporary basis (http://www.bu.edu/finaid/work/quickie_job.html)
Finally, there are temp services for laborers, like Labor Ready (http://www.laborready.com/default.aspx) which has an office on Huntington Ave in Mission Hill on the Brookline line.
Good luck -- at least you have some options.

Don't know about for Boston in particular, but in other places you can usually find day laborers at either a paint store or a Home Depot type store. Cheap. Don't let them high ball you. Usually you'll get the better guys earlier in the day, in the afternoon for an easy job you might find guys willing to work for cheaper.

Check Home Depot or Lowe's. People that need work hang around outside the stores waiting for people to ask if they want a job.
