Since this is in the gardening section I guess your friend is not digging a war zone trench but one in which he will put a lot of organic material and newspaper which will rot down and hold moisture in the soil for next year when he plants runner beans or similar in it. A trench can be of any length and depth. Doesn't need to be too deep as most veg roots are not very long.
It is like a ditch which is dug to be filled.

A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground. Trenches are generally defined by being deeper than they are wide (as opposed to a wider gully or ditch), and by being narrow compared to their length (as opposed to a simple hole).
If you are in a hurry to get answers and it is simply a definition, you can try typing from your browser's address bar this url:

It's another name for a ditch. They fought from trenches in WW1. That's where we get the term "trench warfare". Each side built huge ditches (trenches) across the countryside in Europe. Sometimes they were many many miles long and they faced each other from these trenches across a no-man's land when the war came to a stalemate.

1. Name an anime/manga character, and one thing they really need to learn how to do. Here's one: Lelouch. Needs to learn how to aim without the laser on the gun! And how to think ahead. Nina. Needs to learn how to get a grip because she's a sociopath. 2. Classical music meets anime. What song to what scenes, from what show? Hm...Ode to Joy, the scene where Lulu dies, and Code Geass. 3. Name one thing that makes you really mad in anime/manga. How the girls are always cute, no exceptions! And they're way too comfortable with their bodies...and they're always so slender...gr! 4. What two shows would you like to see crossover? Sailor Moon and Code Geass. ^-^ 5. You walk into a room, and your favorite two characters of the same gender are making out. Your response? -_-; (Holy s**t...I shouldn't be watching...) O_O (But seriously...) ^////^ (This is hot...) 6. HA! HA! NUMBER SIX! Uhm... 7. What political party would your favorite anime/manga character most likely belong to? Weird question...I don't know about Suzu. *Sigh* I'm guessing he'd go left.
