I found a blog in which someone did get rice to grow. Here is an excerpt from that blog. "I've just found out you can also grow rice from the store! At least, the brown long grain and brown jasmine rice I recently got at the natural food store worked. I used a super soggy paper towel/baggie method. "

According to the USA Rice Federation, processed rice is not only shelled, but usually steamed and parboiled as well, which makes rice edible and cleans the grain for packaging. White rice lacks the germ of the grain, or the plant embryo. All this will destroy its ability to germinate. Brown rice, however, keeps the germ of the grain, so theoretically, if you can find this in the raw form, you'd probably be able to grow it.
