Factoring a tri-nomial is really trial and error.

1) what are the factors of 3? 3 and 1

2) what are the factors of 54? 9 and 6. Note 54 is positive, so 9 and 6 must have the same sign (either both positive, or both negative).

Since the middle term is positive, you can guess they are both positive.

3) TRY: (3x +6 )(x +9 ). Does not work? How about

(3x + 9) (x+6)? Check by distribution or foil.

x^2 -- 6x + 9 = 0 or (x -- 3)(x -- 3) = 0 while (x -- 3) = 0 , x = 3 returned while (x -- 3) = 0, x = 3 so x^2 -- 6x + 9 = 0 has 2 same roots x = 3, 3. from quadratic formula a = a million, b = -- 6, c = 9 x = -- b/2a + sqrt{b^2 -- 4ac}/2a, -- b/2a -- sqrt{b^2 -- 4ac}/2a or x = 6/2 + 0, 6/2 -- 0 = 3, 3.
