Most states penalize you by suspending your license if you fail to meet your obligations under a child support order. I'm not claiming or encouraging fathers not to pay but how exactly is this a beneficial and effective tool to promote/encourage men to pay?

How is placing a license on suspension beneficial?

Here are my arguments;
You have to find alternative means to get to and from employment.
If you personally drive and get pulled over the punishment for driving with a suspended license is punishable by jail time.
If you're placed in jail you become further in debt as an obligee.
If you become further in debt, you'll find yourself struggling to make your personal ends meet because they're getting you for unpaid arrears.

So, exactly how is it beneficial to revoke someone's license?

Anyone have any alternative ideas?

And what about those who have no money and are unemployed temporarily? How does it work for them?

Easy; no, everyone keeps coughing out opinions and not providing anything with substance, including you.

Not all men who come out of a divorce come out of it financially ahead. I can't imagine how that fallacy is maintained. (Well, I can, but that is another matter.) It must make perfect sense, according to these minds, that anyone who can't keep up might perform a little better with additional burdens loaded onto their backs.

The pendulum swings back and forth. While some social inequities are ignored for generations, once it is decided to take corrective action, it is often extreme to the point of transferring victimization to the other party, or perceived party. It may take generations before our society is willing to embrace the idea of equal treatment under the law in the matter of divorce and father's rights.

Good luck.

The best answer is not to get into arrears in the first place. A lot of past-due child support is owed because the paying parent doesn't get in front of the issue by going to court to seek a termporary reduction in the support amount.

If you become unemployed or unemployable through no fault of your own, the court will usually grant a reduction.

The irony is that once you are incarcerated, your continuing child support obligation stops, but you are still on the hook for arrears.

child support has become a political issue. the courts are reacting just to appear to be doing something for the children. it is not beneficial to take someones license or throw them in jail. neither will benefit the child and the courts try to claim it for the childs best interest. the real agenda is the courts making money off of child support, along with judges and prosecuters winning elections. the solution is reforms of the system, remove the conflict of interest by the courts. most can work it out wthout the courts, yet the courts won't allow it.

added. $2 per hundred here, multiply it by all the cases in a county,it is making money. I'm a father with custody(that won without a lawyer)that didn't want support.

I am sorry you did not like the answers you received the last time you asked the question.

The reason it works is that people that would otherwise not pay are more likely to pay since they know that they are likely to loose their license and could end up in jail for driving without one. This is normally used when a parent can pay and is choosing not to pay.

If either partner has a change of circumstance they can petition the court to change the support payments. Support payments are based on income.

As a county prosecutor who does child support cases here is my answer. Some Fathers, not all, are utterly intransigent and don't care even if they go to jail. And certainly the argument that you can't pay child support in jail is valid, but that does not change the fact that it is the Father's responsibility to pay for his child, it isn't the tax payers' problem. If they absolutely refuse and are found in contempt, then they should spend some time in jail to reevaluate their life. Jails are full and often they are released and disappear from God's green earth. Still, we have to try and get them to comply. Many times they just try to ignore the issue. But I will tell you that even the ones that don't care about jail time will beg like little kids if you take away their driver's license, they become compliant very quickly for some reason. I think it is because Americans' identities are so closely tied to cars that its like we are stripping them of their soul. As for not being able to drive, honestly is their no public transportation, taxis, or car pools where you live? The benefit is in getting a Father to come to the terms with the fact that if you are old enough to have sex and bring a child into this world you are old enough to pay for the child, even if it means working your *** off every day. If you fail to meet that standard why should the taxpayer's allow you to drive? You gotta pay for junior or you aren't really a Father, just scum.

Oh, and just for the record the courts don't make a dime off of child support, every case costs money in fact.

It's still beneficial, because it forces you to actually pay attention. If you decide to break the law anyway and further exacerbate the issue by driving with no license, that's your problem.

The law provides ways for you to deal with child support and the money you owe for other government debts, but if you don't utilize those options, then they can use the only weapon they have, which is your driving priviledge.

(Notice it's a priviledge, and not a right? If your kid doesn't have the right to child support, you don't have the right to drive. Does THAT seem beneficial?)

Maybe if you spent more time working and paying your child support instead of on Yahoo all day, you wouldn't be in this position. Quit your b!tching and go pay your bills.

what wrong with "opinions" ?

that's all you have (and excuses I would guess)

who cares what a dead-beat dad thinks anyway !
they need to get a job and pay their bills
Then they wont have to worry about being punished for being scum-bags with excuses for not taking care of their own kids !

( It is beneficial Because - many scum bags will Only pay child support in order to keep their license ! - Get It ? )

The idea was they would already have the money and be forced to finally cough it up.... this program has netted millions of back child support and works.
