It depends on if it's an emergency c-section or not. If it's a planned c section you can specifically ask them to wait until after your epidural. You can even ask your doctor to specify this in his orders if you speak to him prior. Sometimes in emergency situations you don't have that luxury but if it's planned ahead of time you can be more specific with your requests, speak up and voice your wishes to your doctor.

For both of my c-sections they put the catheter in after they had administered the epidural. That way I didn't feel it going in. I wasn't numb when they took it out, it didn't hurt just felt weird. You can certainly ask the doctor when he does it and see if he can do it while you are numb to put you a little more at ease. No harm in asking.

In every c-section I have seen, the epidural has been in place first so the catheter is not felt going in.

Honestly, I don't even remember it going in before my c-section, so chances are pretty good I didn't feel it. It really doesn't hurt a woman to have a catheter put in by a competent nurse (unlike for men, for whom it's not a very pleasant process).
I don't recommend taking the advice of the poster above me who says you can refuse a catheter. You won't be able to get up for hours and hours after surgery, and you'll be hydrated by saline. You'll have to have a catheter...or the alternative is peeing all over yourself several times. Doesn't exactly sound pleasant, does it?

with me they did it after the epidural. But I didn't know I was having a C section when I got the epidural. It was an emergency.
With my 2nd, it was scheduled and they gave me a spinal blcok, didn't feel a thing, and the cathetur was done after.

They give you a catheter whether you go natural (with an epidural, if not you have the choice of a bedpan [yay!]) or have a csection so your bladder empties itself as needed. If you ask, they shouldn't have a problem giving it to you after the epidural. My nurses were fine with giving it to me after.

With my daughters it was (both) after the epidural. There is already so much going on that you don't need the additional stress.

I believe you can tell them that you would prefer they put it in after you are numb from the epidural. That is what my childbirth teacher told me. Your hospital may be different though.

With a planned c-section, mine were always done prior to getting my spinal, because after the spinal I was unable to move, and they needed me to be able to move my legs away to do it. It doesn't hurt. It can pinch a little as it is inserted, but then as soon as you get that analgesic, you won't even know it is there!
