First find out if it is the supply, or the waste. If it leaks all the time it is the supply if it only leaks when you take a shower it is probably the waste. Before you cut anything check you overflow gasket many times the water runs onto this device and it is the only thing leaking. next take the face plate off of the faucet ( single handle) and see if you can see anything there. if you can't locate the source of the leak. call someone who can. they may need to go ino the room next to the shower and cut an access hole to see.If the drywall downstairs is already ruined you could remove a small amout to troubleshoot. (you'll have to replace it anyway.)

First consider if you can access the leak from the side, if so cut a hloe in the wall from the next room. If this don't work, you may indeed need to cut a hole in the ceiling below. Fixing these holes isn't that big of a deal.

If the shower "deadends" into a wall, cut a hole near the floor on the other side of the wall to see whats leaking. Instead of repairing the hole, buy an access door and install it for any future problems.

till now you do the rest, you may restoration the leak interior the bathe. this could be complicated or solved actually with some caulk. you could no longer get sufficient suggestion approximately it on the information superhighway. The ceiling could be repaired if the broken section is small, yet while the broken section is greater advantageous, the integrity of the ceiling could be a controversy and could be repaired by way of a professional.

Make sure your shower isn't leaking from the shower plate(chrome plate) behind the handle. put some caulking around it and let it set up over night and see if the leak stops. Drains don't leak very easy unless you know it for sure, Most drains unscrew and you make a puddy rope and screw it back in.

be sure the drain is the problem, it could also be the hot or cold suppply lines. if in fact it is the drain, it would be less time consuming to repair it from below. good luck.
