I'm planning my first trip to Las Vegas. I'm considering staying at the Riviera, but have seen some mixed review about the hotel/casino. I was hoping someone who has been there can tell me if it worth staying at or not. Also, if I do stay there how difficult is it to get to the other casinos further up the strip? Thanks!!

My first question is: how budget restricted are you? The Riviera is an old hotel/casino and needs updating badly. It will be better for you to stay someplace else in my opinion. Try the Stratosphere, Planet Hollywood, TI, to name a few less expensive ones. Avoid older hotels like Riviera, Tropicana (undergoing renovations), Imperial Palace and Sahara, unless you like it dark, dingy and questionable. If you can afford better, do it. Check the websites below. Also, it is not difficult at all traveling up and down the strip to other hotels/casinos. If you're a walker, you can walk easily around. The buses and monorails are also very good. Cabs are OK too if you can afford the usual long waits in traffic. Good luck and have fun.

I've been to Vegas a number of times and it is on the strip, just on the end. You'll walk no matter where you stay and there are strip busses that get you around for a fare price.

I've not stayed at the Riviera but will be in October. I picked it because we havent' been on that end of the strip since our very first trip there over 20 years ago.

It isn't new, but have been told it has been remodeled. Like others have stated, how much time do you spend in the room. If they are clean that's all I care about.

I explore a lot of casinos so the place I'm staying isn't important, I only gamble there while I'm waiting for my party to get ready to go out.

One poster mentioned the Luxor, have stayed there twice and it is very nice though the room we had last time was worn it had a great view.

Have fun!

The Riviera Hotel/Casino has definitely seen better days, but they should also be one of the more reasonable places to stay if you're price shopping. The old adage of, you get what you pay for. They are located towards the north end of the Strip, right before you get to Downtown, so the neighboring hotels/casinos are the Circus Circus. Actually, that's all I can think of right now since there's quite a bit of construction going on in that end of the Strip. The newer end of the Strip is the Center strip and South end, a pretty good walk away, but definitely walkable. Otherwise, you will need to drive or take a cab if you're lazy like me....

blue bee stated that it is not on the strip, but if you look at the address, it is on las vegas blvd. it is located at the end of the new strip, but in walking distance to casinos like the wynn, ceasars, fashion show shopping center, treasure island, and venetian. if you want to reach places like mandalay bay at the end of the strip. there are free trolleys that can take you up and down the strip, just ask the hotel for schedules of the trolleys. the riviera has a trolley depot on the south side of the hotel. it is not bad a place to stay at, but just keep mind that this is one of the older hotels on the strip, so it doesn't look as extravagant as the high end resorts, but if you don't plan on being in the room all day, i'd say go for it.

the Riviera isn't on the strip. Its a good $20 cab ride to the center of the strip from there. Its an okay casino. They're all pretty much the same to me, so if you don't mind spending the money to get to and from the actual strip - go for it.

EDIT: D'oh! My bad, I was getting the Riviera confused with the Rio (which isn't on the strip). I've never actually been to the Riviera so just ignore me. You'll have fun no matter where you go. Ooh ooh, but you shouldn't pass up on opportunity to go up to the top of the stratosphere. Theres a sweet cigar / bluesy type bar up there with an absolutely killer view, and a couple of sick rides. Have fun!

Go to the Coca Cola store. - on the strip next to the M&M Store You can get a tray or two of different colas and the sorts that Coke sells around the world. Some taste good and some are weird, but you be the judge. Sept. that's usually when my wife and I go and it's usually hot. There is an aquarium at Mandolin Bay. Nascar experience New York,New York Vientian There is a (one of the last) FAO Shcawtz toy stores in the Forum shops at cearers palace. If you like Star Trek at all as mentioned got to the Hilton and check that out. If you like anytype of thril rides the ones at the top of the Stratusphere are Great. if not there is an observation deck with a great view. Sue Hawk of TV Show Survivor fame has a juice bar called Juices Wild, not on the strip. The Red Rock resort's head chef is from TV's Hell Kitchen. So much to do. Have a great time. Wear comportable shoes. 99% of the stuff is very casual, so jeans/shorts sneakers are fine. Traffic on the strip is bad if driving, although I always drive. Check out the strip at night, the lights are amazing. Be careful. Like anyplace. Pickpockets are common on the strip, it's very crowded and people easily bump into you on purpose. keep you money in the front pocket. some else recently gave me some advice If you have kids give them a disposable camera so they can take their own pics. If they happen to loose it no big deal. If going to the grand canyon as mentioned make reservations. When my wife and I went, we didn't arriving at 11:00 AM most of the rooms were already booked. We were lucky to get a room. it's a long drive out of the grand canyon area to to next area of hotels.

The Riviera is kinda of inbetween the new strip and downtown. You will have a good walk to get to the action.

If it's you first time and you don't need pure luxury, it's going to be fine. You won't spend much time in the room anyways.

out of a 10....I would rate it at 5.

Walking easier in the fall/winter. Cooler.
Taxis, public bus fare, monorail stops at Sahara, Convention Center way behind Wynn, MGM, Ballys, Imperial Palace.

Go with Sahara just about the same age/should be in same price range. Ask a travel agent. The monorail access in back (short walk).

If you are planning to see local museums, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire. You will need a car, unless bussing in from private bus fair place. When you do that, your on their time schedule, not a lot of time to explore.

If you do not walk well, rent a car.

Sahara to Rivierra is a long walk. Sahara to Wynn is a long walk. Remember the monorail!
Discount tickets avail. downtown with out of state id.

Keep in mind you won't be in your room very much! You can easily walk from one casino to the other on the strip! No doubt, you will have a blast!

That is pretty far from where the center of the strip is now. Here is a map:
http://www.lasvegashotels-online.com/las-vegas-hotels-strip-map.html?ggle=lvmap&gclid=CI6zndCCmY4CFQsdYAodxj8UVQ
I would stay in the area where LV Blvd is vertical on the map.
