The answer is simple....
Let the duration of each of the calls be 'x' and 'x+8'
And since the total duration of both the calls together is 42 mins.,
The Equation is-
x+x+8=42
2x+8=42
2x=42-8
2x=34
x=34/2
x=17
Therefore the duration of each of the calls are 17 mins, and 25 mins(17+8=25). Also, the sum of the duration of both the calls equals 42....thus verified!
There you go!!
It is not possible for both the calls to last for 42 mins EACH, as you specified in your question. But if the question is really correct, it could lead to only one answer, a very long phone bill!!!
I'm guessing you're in the 10th grade and this problem is from the unit "Polynomials"....

42= c+(c+8)
42= 2c+8
34=2c
17=c
now add 8 for the longer call
17+8=25
and to check we add 17 to 25 and get 42, the total the phone bill said we had talked

First define your variables:
Let x= call 1
Let y = call 2
Since you know that call one was 8 minutes longer than call two we can now say that x=(y+8)
Now set up an equation using y:
(y+8) + Y=42
simplify:
y+8+y=42
2y+8=42
2y=42-8
Now isolate your y by dividing both sides by 2:
y= 34/2
y=17 so since x is equal to y+8 you now know that x=25
To check your answer add them:
17+25= 43
Therefore call one was 17min and call two was 25 min

I'm assuming you meant "the two calls lasted 42 min together", not each.
x= phone call 1
x+8= phone call 2
x+x+8= 42
2x+8=42
2x=34
x=17
phone call 1= 17 minutes
phone call 2=25 minutes

Let L represent the longer call and N represent the shorter call.
L+N=42 (in min)
L-N=8
L=42-N
L-N=8
(42-N)-N=8
42-2N=8
-42 -42 (-42 from both sides)
-2N=-34
multiply each side by -1
Divide both sides by two
N=17
Now, because L+N=42,
L+(17)=42
subtract 17 from each side
L=25
17+8=25
25+17=42
It all works out.

all i really did was pick random numbers and try them, this process is called guess and check.
29+21=50 [X]
28+20=48 [X]
27+19=46 [X]
26+18=44 [X]
25+17=42 [YES!]
so your answer is 25 and 17

Let x be the length of the shorter call
x + (x+8) = 42
2x + 8 = 42
You can take it from there

To show z / (pq) = 1 / (pr) + 1 /(qr) , given r = (p + q) / z Um... almost forgot... We know that p≠0, q≠0, and r≠0 We have to start from the given to show the other part follows. r = (p + q) / z Multiply both sides by z rz = p+q Multiply both sides by 1/pqr z/(pq) = 1/(pr) + 1/(qr) QED that is, IF r=(p+q)/z THEN z/(pq) = 1/(pr) + 1/(qr) The other way that has been suggested, is to multiply both sides of z / (pq) = 1 / (pr) + 1 /(qr) by pqr That gives you rz = q + p Multiply both sides by 1/z r = (p+q)/z But that only shows that, coupled with the proof above, only shows that z / (pq) = 1 / (pr) + 1 /(qr) , IFF r = (p + q) / z

I don't have the answer to your question, but it sounds an awful lot, like you're trying to get someone to do a homework problem for you. You're not doing that..............................right?
