Depends on the species. Some are colored different, some have different body or fin shapes, some are bigger or smaller, etc, etc.

Goldfish males get white spots on their gills around mating time. Females often have a visible bump by their vent (where they poop) that looks like a tiny, tiny scale sticking out a little. This is the ovipositor.

it's almost impossible to sex goldfish unless they're in mating time
