Also, LESS THAN 50% of those displaced were African American.

Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to ask some questions:

1) People in New Orleans lost their homes and can't rebuild because they did not have insurance. Who's fault is that? Why were so many home owners without insurance? Isn't that irresponsible? Why should I pay for that with my taxes? And you just EXPECT the government to build and just GIVE you a new home?

2) People in New Orleans lost their apartments because the buildings were destroyed and they didn't have renters insurance. Why is that the tax payers fault? Is it MY job to support you because of your irresponsibility? And you just expect to be GIVEN a new apartment after they rebuild? How do you figure that?

Seems to me that all those displaced by Katrina were pretty much asking for it. And now you just expect me to pay taxes and just bail you out? I think not.

Thoughts?

And PLEASE spare me the "I hope nothing bad happens to you" speech.

Wow, while your opinions are much stronger than mine, I do agree to a certain extent. What I can't understand is this. You've been displaced - the government has given you somewhere to stay rent FREE. If you don't have any bills why can't you get your lives back on track? If I had three months of not having to pay mortgage do you know how much that would help me out?

I may strike a nerve with some readers, but this is my opinion. Those people were living in those circumstances for a reason - because they were satisfied with what they had and didn't want anything more. They were content with substandard housing, not working (those that weren't), and that was their way of life. So now that they've got to do something for themselves they don't even know where to begin.

Survival of the fittest. And plenty are found over by the wayside.

Honey, your few tax dollars aren't going to do much. If it happened to you I wonder how you would feel about the situation. Natural disasters are no body's fault... and good thing we have a government that can assist in getting things back to normal after such a catastrophe. And just so you know... your tax dollars go to a lot more things that you probably wouldn't approve of... watch C-Span every once in a while and then you will really be complaining. At least this time they decided to keep the money within the US.

I agree to an extent, but insurance is not cheap. When you are struggling to feed and clothe your children, you aren't really thinking about the possibility of a hurricane destroying your house. Some of those people were just thinking about when they were going to eat again.

It wasn't just the people in New Orleans that were affected. I have family members in Mississippi who lost everything. But I don't hear about helping those in Mississippi rebuild and I don't hear those in Mississippi complaining. Draw your own conclusions. Good luck. 2D

I am not judging, but you seem very insensitive.Their are lots of miscellaneous lost causes your tax dollars already go to.If you,or anyone in your family were to be caught in a natural disaster,I would think that you would want some help also.
