Us buying into them. If we didn't buy into them, they wouldn't sell. White supremacists have record labels and they produce and sell records, but you have never heard one of their songs on the radio now have you? You know why? Because only a small segment of society would buy the records. When people stop spending their money on music that is filled with poison of any kind, the music WILL change.

Buying into stereotypes. The perfect example came when Bill O'Reilly criticized Virginia Tech for letting Nas perform at an upcoming concert remembering the victims of the massacre. He called Nas a gangsta rapper who only talks about guns and drugs. Thats wrong. He has very uplifting and smart lyrics. Only a very small portion of his songs are semi-gangsta. In fact a lot of rappers like Nas, Andre 3000 of OutKast, Lupe Fiasco, Common, and more preach against objectifying women, guns, etc. But, of course, there are the 50 Cents and Young Jeezys of the world, as well.

Both. They only do it because there's an audience for it. If people stopped buying it altogether there would be no money in making the music. But, because they glorify the stereotyping, people are drawn to therefore buying it.

Perpetuating is bad, but not as bad as encouraging others to buy into them. It is one thing to rap about a feeling or an emotion that you feel personally or even gone through yourself, but it is another to falsify statements about committing acts of crimes that you yourself know is wrong, but yet you encourage other young adults to behave in a manner that is harmful to them and their community. And for those of us who have older parents who live in these neigborhoods, this perpretating is pssing us off!! The lies and the false ideas are killing our communities.
