my 6 month old son has had a cold going on 3 wks now. He has been fine during the days but waking 2-3 times a night (he used to sleep through the night) He never developed a fever so the doctors office said they didn't need to see him and it will go away on it's own. Last night he was very congested sounding and woke up and it took 2 hrs for him to fall back asleep only to wake up 1/2 hr later again. I have a vaporizor in his room, I have been using saline nose spray and aspirating his nose, and have raised the head of the bed but now not even these are working. During his naps today, he wouldn't lye down he would start screaming until I picked him up and would fall asleep. How long does a cold usually last in a baby? Is there anything else I can do to help? I suctioned some yellow mucous from his nose and when I called the doctors office the nurse said that it was not a sign that it's getting worse, it's probably that its been sitting in his nose for a while.

Colds can last a while, especially if he gets re-infected.
The best thing you can do is to watch for signs of an ear infection and to keep him hydrated. His body is fighting the cold, and just watch him carefully.
We were always told to make our son RUN when he had conjestion to keep it out of his lungs to make sure he coughed it up, to avoid infection.

Sweetie You should take your son to the Dr . Yellow mucous is a sign of infection. Ear infections have a oder some times and it hurts when baby lays down from the pressure Its way worse at night. You've done a great job with treating his cold . Thick mucous can't move and drains into the ear. They treat it with antibiotics after 24 hrs he'll sleep much better.

My 3 month old had the same thing happen to him. I think he caught a cold because the air conditioner was too cold at night. I kept it at 70 degrees so that he wouldn't get too hot. He started coughing and sneezing. And he had the yellow mucous a lot. I gave him Tylenol cough and cold for children but only a small amount 0.3 ML. It really worked. No more sneezing and running nose.

poor little thing, try running the bath with the window's and door closed to let the steam build up, this will help his breathing, do not use to many nose sprays as they can only irritate the lining of the nose, give him over the counter medicine, like calpol to reduce his fever, if nothing helps and you still think it is lasting to long you have every right to bring him to a doctor, don't mind if they say you are just fussing, it can be very stressful seeing your baby suffer, so get help and this will help you from being stressed at a time when you should be enjoying your son. good luck. lol xxx

It maybe a ear infection because the mucus when yellow has no infection green is a sign of infection. That is a long time for him to be getting off a cold. You should check for signs of a ear infection. If he is pulling on his ears that is a sign. If the ear infection does not get treated he may lose some hearing so the best thing to do is have him see a doctor.

I would take him to another doctor for a second opinion before it turns to something more serious if his not getting better.it should be clearing by now.3 weeks is along time to be congested the poor little thing sounds like he needs antibiotics I was always told if it turns green its an infection they can't do anything about a virus but the can do something about infection your the only one that really cares about your own child so go to the hospital or another GP.

my 8 month old has also had this problem lately (going on about 2 weeks or so) I took him to the dr. and they told me to get PEDIACARE. It comes in a very small container and is an over the counter product specifically for infants. seems to help, but the nose is still runny! no fever...just congested. I am in the same situation as you, they said keep going with the OTC meds and it will go away on its own...once we get him up in the morning and he gets going it seems to get better...as long as he is not running a fever or seeming too uncomfortable, I think it will work itself out! But if he starts to run ANY fever, contact Dr.!

It sounds like you're doing everything right, but that's an awful long time to have a cold. If your doctor won't see him, go to another pediatrician. Be sure and give the baby plenty of fluids. That will help liquefy the congestion.

first thing find another doctor for your baby because a baby that young with a 3wk cold is not good. like others said it my have turned into an ear infection that happens but dont worry. take your beautiful son the the ER tell them his problem and let them prescribe something for him. they may tell you to follow up with his doctor and go from there. the reason your doctor said what he /she may have said is because you said it was a cold and it might not be a cold. just take him to the ER let them check him out and ask questions to mke sure you'rei doing the right thing. if you like his doctor then follow up with him or start looking for another doctor. fluids is a good way to cure a cold like orange juice, apple juice, or even broth ( chicken or beef). he will be fine and i wish yall the best. i have yall in my prayers.one more thing keep prume juice in the frige that helps with constinpation and keep sucking mucas out his nose.
