okay, at the end of september, i have an audition for my community's children's theater production. my parents said i can only do the show if i keep up a grade of all straight A's. and that kinda hard to do since the rehearsals are going to run from october-december! and i get home from school (i am in middle school) at 3:10 pm. everyday and i get a LOT of homework and tests. rehearsals will probably start around 5 pm or 6 pm i'm guessing and end at around 8:30-9:00 pm since it's a school night. there's no doubt i'll miss at least 3 rehearsals to stay at home to study for a big test. but how can i balance it? i really want to to the play, but i can only do that if i keep my grades high. please suggest? 10 pts. for sure.

You have to learn to study in free time. Whether it's a few minutes between classes or at the end of class when the lesson is over. You may also need to way up and hour earlier and designate that as time to do your homework.

Marianne had got it right. But there is one more thing. You should know how many rehearsals you have once you are cast and you should never miss a rehearsal, so it is doublely important to do what she says about studying. The rehearsals may be later in the evening that you think.

My kids do it all the time, you just have to manage your time really well. If you don't then really think about whether or not you can handle it. You can't be messing around with the other kids who's parents are ok with Cs. You need to take your homework to the theatre and when you are not in the scene being worked on, sit and study or do your work. Be within ear shot if you can or appoint someone you can absolutely count on to PLEASE come get you when they call for your character, group, etc. Make sure the assistant director knows that you are doing schoolwork and that you will be in a specific place so that if no one can find you it will hopefully occur to them to look in the foyer or wherever you said you'd be. If you can remain in the theatre and still concentrate and have enough light, do that. Don't be afraid to use the phrase, "sorry guys, I have to get this done" with your cast mates who want to run around.

You can do it :-) Have fun!

Definately try out first. You will not get most of the parts that you try out for, and you may get a small part.

Alot of the time directors choose to only rehearse certain scenes per day, and you can get the schedule to find out when you absolutely must be there. (The director knows that you are in school, so that shouldn't be a problem).

If you really want to do something, it can be done! Just put your mind to it and tell yourself that it will only be for a couple months!

... I just wanted to say that you should NEVER miss a rehearsal. If you have an authentic conflict, fine, but please, make sure it is life or death! Make sure that this show means as much to you as any other responsiblity...
