I will guess by saying blown head gasket - seems to be a common place thing...

how long does it take? if you are having a garage do the work - look at being tied up for at most - two weeks
and that's only if there is not a crack in the head - then you can either buy a new one (cha ching) or try to locate a used one - which will need resurfacing and testing to make sure that it also does not have a crack (more cha ching)
if that's the case - you may want to reconsider retiring the old buddy and moving on

could run ya $1,000 + - weigh your options

If it's the head gasket, about 3 - 4days

1 day to let the engine cool off before you take it to bits, otherwise when the metal forming the engine contracts as it cools, the top & bottom half might not go back together properly.

2nd day to take it all to bits, and scrape off the old gasket (some are harder to get off than others... can take up a whole afternoon).... and clean up the mess inside the engine - usually a white mayonaise like substance forms in the engine from the oil & coolant mixing together where the gasket has been leaking.

3rd / 4th day to put everything back together properly.

If you are talking head gasket the time depends on the car and mechanic that does the job. On average I would say with no problems the car can be fixed in 3-6 hrs, however, if you have a cracked head or other problems it could take longer.

Good Luck,

I totally agree it depends on the Type of car if it's an older type without the sensors, ecu's, air con and every other bright shiny thing possible it should only take an hour or two but the more sophisticated the engine the longer it will take and the other variable is the ability of the person doing the job, 'knows his way around a tool box' is going to do it faster than 'the two things on the ends of my arms are there to stop my wrists fraying'. Best of luck buy a 'Haynes' and go for it.
If you are stuck get in touch with the person who said Ten mins and film it should get enough when you sell the film to the TV to buy a new car

If its a head gasket then it will take anything from 3 to 7 days depending on the company they send the head to for skimming.

Straightforward replacement of head gasket on a conventional engine 3 to 6 hours. However if the joint surfaces have been damaged by hot gas blow by allow a couple of days extra to get the head skimmed; if the block is damaged think replacement engine!

It depends what gasket and on what car
If its a head gasket on a Metro then only about an hour or so,if its a Mondeo then best part of a day, if not part of the next day aswell.

I don't know of many gaskets that "blow" other than the head or water outlet. But without more info on which gasket and what type of auto/truck, it's impossible to say.
