Hehe I live in Canada and keep threatening to move to Europe (France or Germany in particular) as they have better leave and benefits.
But I honestly think that the US should be taken in front of the world court and tried for crimes against humanity. Most women would benefit from 4-6 weeks off BEFORE they give birth and demanding a mom return to work at most 6-12 weeks after delivery is just cruel.
(BTW in Canada, it is at least 50 weeks of PAID leave, it is at least 87 weeks of job protected leave if you count both parents. 17 weeks of maternity leave + each caregiver gets 35 weeks. Even adoptive parents qualify for the 35 weeks. However only 35 weeks of parental leave are paid, per child but can be split between parents. Some provinces offer more than that)

congratulations on your pregnancy! i am 25 days away from having my first baby, and i am only allowed 6 weeks off for maternity leave! when i saw that Canadians got a whole year, i just about cried. how great would it be to not worry financially while spending the best year of your life at home?!

Yes I think that is great. Some Scandanavian countries are the same way. They actually pay the women who are on maternity leave. And then when they go back to work they pay a portion of the childcare costs. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

Wow??? I never knew that maybe its because the United States thinks that to many people in our country don't work is why they only let ya have 6 weeks. But this is my third child and I know the first year of their life you can never get back any of their firsts, words, walking, crawling, and all those kinds of things that would of been wonderful!! Not to have to wait till I got home for someone else to tell me what they did that was exciting.

Damn! I work for the City of New York -- government job -- and we do not get one HOUR of paid maternity leave. I am covered under FMLA just to ensure that my position is here when I get back but I have to use my vacation and sick time and if I do not have enough, I just dont get paid. Now that is a crock!!!!!

Definitely!!!!!!! my goodness, that would have been so nice. Going back to work was the single most hard thing I've ever had to do. It broke my heart leaving my weeee baby with strangers when I had waited so long (14 years) to be a mommy. She's 6 months today, she weaned me early from breast feeding but I still take my lunch hour to go visit her and brighten my day.

It does bother me that in the U.S., breastfeeding mothers can't take a full 6 months of medical leave from work after having a baby. I am also pregnant and working and I am discouraged that I will be forced to work full time for medical insurance, which will take away precious time I could be spending with my baby. Six weeks is not nearly enough.

I don't know about that. If I take a year off, I'll never want to go back to work. Lol

Yes the US government definitely doesn't really value families. They keep saying they do, well show it!
