Read up on the Library of Congress website on copyrighting your songs first, and come up with a name for your publishing company. This is just to get organized.

If you're planning on putting your songs out there for others to record, that takes a lot of networking.

There are publishers that will try to charge you to publish the songs, but they should only be collecting on their end once royalties come in.

Yes, this is registering a business, there are forms, and it will cost a small fee. Also keep your mailing info up to date, otherwise you'll never see the checks if they don't know where to mail them.

Then go to SESAC, BMI, or ASCAP and see which one works best for you. Other countries do things different so you may have to work on international publishing issues later.

You need to write or type all of your songs on paper first, then mail them to yourself and most importantly don't open the envelop. This is the same as a copyright. Next, find an agent and pray to God he isn't a crook. Lastly don't get your hopes up.
