A collection agent for Chrysler called about 5 yrs. ago. We had power of attorney for one of our children who joined the military & knew he was covered under the Soldiers and Sailors Act.
The collection guy said he was going to come take the vehicle and we said, "Go ahead, we're notifying the sheriff's office because what you are about to do is illegal." He had not a clue about anything to do with the military.
We went to the local Chrysler Dealer and got everything straightened out, they had dealt with family members a long time & were aplologetic but we never got any apology from Headquarters. The collection agent kept calling. We let the answering machine get it after the 3rd time, and the car wasn't towed.

I had a debt collector call about my student loan. The only problem was I had never missed a payment and was actually a payment away from the end of the loan term. The idiot told me that I should stop paying Sallie Mae and pay them directly instead.

Suddenly I realized my answering machine - it was back in the days before cell phones and voicemail - was recording the call. I played him back a piece of the conversation and told him he had three days to send me information about the debt or I was sending the tape on to the appropriate state agency. (He was in Mass. and I was in GA).

Never heard from him again. But anytime I get a call from anyone claiming that I owe money, I just let them know I'm recording the call and that they should send me information in writing. The conversation ends pretty quickly and I've never gotten anything in writing.

I say; I know you do this for money. I cannot pay the bill and you will be wasting your time and losing money by continuing to call me. That is a rude as you can get.

....I would like to say...." Well I don't have any money now ... but I have hopes of selling my brain for $ 30,000. So when I get the money I send you the $475.90 that I owe on my bill.
