Unfortunately, you are not alone. It is difficult to read for pleasure if what you are reading is not interesting to you. First and foremost find a topic you think might interest you or a genre of literature that is similiar to the types of films and movies you enjoy; this is key.
Secondly, set the stage for yourself. Find a quiet place with no distractions, (i.e. phones off, ringers turned down, music off, no t.v.), get yourself a light snack or beverage and snuggle yourself into a comfortable position. I personally curl up in the corner of my couch with a glass of tea and some almonds.
Thirdly, if you find yourself drifting away from what your reading, pause and ask yourself questions about what your reading. For example you might ask yourself (why did she ....?, or Hmmm, I wonder if she will.....). These tyupes of questions might trigger a curiosity or desire to find the answers.
Reading can take you places you may never go, allow you to live vicariously through the lives and experiences of characters both fictional and nonfictional & open up your mind and all ow you to grow in your thoughts and character, so don't give up... just experiment until you find that nitch for yourself in the world of literature.

It might not be your reading "style". I would try a broad assortment of books to try and find an author who writes in a way that hooks you. Some people have to be hooked fast (like me) and others can read through lots of detail before they get to the exciteing part. For instance, I REALLY like the harry potter movies but cannot read the books for the life of me. I fall asleep before the 1st chapter, but I think its just the way they are written. What kind of books to do you like? Mystery, romance, horror. I am personally a horror fan so I recommended any authors it would be Anne Rice and stephen king my two favorite.

What do you mean, you "can't"? Do you just get bored when you're not required to read something? If so, perhaps you just need to try reading different books, maybe something a little more gripping. Try thrillers - anything described as 'unputdownable' sounds like the sort of thing you need.

My theory is, the books you read aren't interesting enough to hold you a captive audience. You might find you like reading if you select a book that is probably not one you would ordinairly ready. Worth a try!
This may be for children but I see no reason why it wouldn't work for older persons.
